Following are excerpts of activities reported by the Jefferson police department:
Thursday, Feb. 28: At 1:14 pm staff at Greene County High School requested an officer after finding possible narcotics on a male juvenile. The substance tested positive for marijuana with a NICS test kit. The officer is investigating and future charges are expected for the 15-year-old male. At 1:15 pm an officer began a sex assault Investigation after a report from a Perry officer. The reported event occurred in Jefferson against a 15-year-old female within the last two years.
Wednesday, Feb. 27: At 1:08 pm a traffic stop was performed at S. Walnut and W. Madison Sts. The officer’s investigation led to the arrest of Greg William Hackler, 28, of Jefferson for driving while license barred (aggravated misdemeanor)*. At 5:05 pm a complainant reported possible criminal mischief to his pickup truck while it was parked in the 100 block of N. Chestnut St. The officer is investigating.
Tuesday, Feb. 26: At 10:25 am a complainant reported the smell of natural gas in the area of the 200 block of S. Oak St. The officer could not locate the source of the odor. Alliant Energy was contacted. At 11:32 am staff at Greene County Middle School requested an officer for a possible suicidal juvenile. The officer transported the juvenile to ER to be evaluated by a medical doctor. At 12:20 pm staff at White Oak Station turned in a small baggy of suspected narcotics that was located in the business on the floor. The officer is investigating. At 3:53 pm the Jefferson fire department and JPD officers assisted the sheriff’s office with a vehicle fire at Henderson Park. At 6:12 pm officers were requested at a home on W. Monroe St for a possible suicidal female. The officers transported the female to ER for evaluation. At 8:52 pm a complainant reported two stray dogs near W. Lincoln Way and Grimmell Rd. The officer placed the dogs in the animal holding facility.
Monday, Feb. 25: At 1:15 pm staff at Home State Bank turned in a possible counterfeit $20 bill. The bank received the bill in a business deposit from the weekend. At 8:56 pm a male subject walked to the LEC and advised he was sure the police were looking for him. He advised of an altercation with his girlfriend at a residence in the 400 block of S. Locust St. The male’s conversation with the officer and an investigation led to the arrest of Shawn David Annear, 43, of Jefferson for criminal mischief- first degree (Class C felony), domestic abuse assault- (serious misdemeanor) and disorderly conduct and reckless driving, both simple misdemeanors*. During the course of a verbal argument that grew to a physical argument, Annear rammed the victim’s vehicle, pushing it through a closed garage door and structurally damaging the garage wall as well. Damage to the garage was estimated at $8,000 to $10,000. Damage to the victim’s 2010 Chevrolet Impala was estimated at $8,000. Damage to Annear’s 1996 Chevy S-10 pickup truck was estimated at $2,000. ***** An officer has requested an arrest warrant for Jay Dean Springer, 60, of Jefferson for assault- simple*. The charge stems from a reported assault outside Doc’s Stadium on 2/21.
Sunday, Feb. 24: At 12:38 am officers assisted a stuck motorist near S. Cedar and E. Harrison Sts. At 12:49 am an officer checked on an unoccupied vehicle stuck on W. Wall St near the secondary roads department facility. At 1:43 pm staff at Wild Rose Casino requested officers to give stranded subjects a ride to the temporary storm shelter located at Greene County Community Center. At 4:21 am a resident advised of a male walking on Grimmell Rd. The officer located the male, who refused assistance or a ride. At 4:44 am a complainant reported her boyfriend had walked away from Wild Rose Casino after the two had argued. She could not locate him. The officer located the subject at the Super 8 Motel. At 5:27 am a complainant reported the theft of a wallet from Wild Rose Casino. The wallet contained a large quantity of cash and credit cards. A suspect has been developed from security video and the investigation is ongoing. At 6:39 am an officer assisted a motorist stuck on Gallup Rd. At 8:35 am officers assisted a motorist stuck at N. Grimmell and W. Washington Sts. At 9:25 am an officer assisted a motorist stuck on Gallup Road. At 10:164 am an officer checked 245th St west of Jefferson for two subjects reportedly walking toward town. The officer did not locate them. ***** Officers issued two citations for snow emergency parking violations and had one vehicle towed from the downtown square during this reporting period.
Saturday, Feb. 23: At 1:29 am officers were requested by parents at a residence in the 500 block of Hillcrest Place. They believed their juvenile son was under the influence of marijuana. The officer’s investigation led charging the juvenile with minor using tobacco/vape products. The officer also learned of two local students who provided the vaping products to the minor. Future charges against them are pending the close of the investigation. No narcotics were located. At 9:21 pm an officer started an investigation of a couple going to several local businesses and making purchases with possibly fraudulent cards. The investigation is ongoing.
Friday, Feb. 22: At 9:25 am an officer investigated a two-vehicle property damage accident in the 600 block of W. Washington St. Eric Grevson of Jefferson turned north off N. Walnut St onto Washington and during the turn struck a legally parked 1995 Dodge Ram pickup truck owned by Matthew Roberts of Jefferson. Grevson was cited for driving while license suspended, failure to provide proof of financial liability- accident related, and failure to maintain control. Damage to his 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee was estimated at $1,000. Damage to Roberts’ truck was also estimated at $1,000. At 1:02 pm a business owner advised officers that the White Oak Station was selling soda pop without the Iowa 5-cent refund labels affixed, but was still collecting the 5-cent deposit as the products were sold. The officer verified the information and advised the business to stop selling the items. The local manager advised the product is being shipped from the Texas area by White Oak corporate. The product has been removed from sales. At 4:12 pm a subject dropped off a stray dog he located in Jefferson. The officer placed the animal in the animal holding facility. At 6:44 pm a complainant reported an accident at the intersection of E. Harrison and S. Locust Sts. Trevor Ross of Jefferson was northbound on Locust driving a 2002 GMC Envoy owned by Danielle Ross. Joshua Lawson of Jefferson was eastbound on Harrison St driving a 2012 Chrysler 200 owned by Theresa Lawson. Ross struck Lawson’s vehicle in the intersection. Lawson was cited for failure to yield to the vehicle on the right. Damage to his vehicle was estimated at $2,000. Damage to the vehicle Ross was driving was estimated at $1,000. At 7:23 pm officers assisted the Jefferson fire department with smoke in a residence in the 200 bock of E. Clark St. They determined bread in a toaster was the cause of the smoke. No damage was reported.
Thursday, Feb. 21: ***** An arrest warrant has been requested for Lauren Marie Verle Schulte, 24, of Jefferson for assault on a peace officer (serious misdemeanor)*. The charge stems from an incident at Greene County Medical Center on 2/15.

Tuesday, Feb. 19: At 9 am the Ottawa, IL, PD requested assistance from a Jefferson officer in locating a vehicle in Jefferson that had been involved in a hit and run accident in their city. The officer is working to locate the vehicle and owner. At 7:49 pm an officer located a vehicle parked at Wild Rose Casino with registration that had expired in 2015. The owner of the vehicle was located inside the casino. The officer’s investigation led to the arrest of Douglas Duane Owen, 36, of Churdan for driving while license barred (aggravated misdemeanor)*. At 10:35 pm a complainant reported a subject going through parked vehicles in the 500 block of S. Olive St. The officers and a deputy combed the area, but did not locate anyone. ***** Officers issued three citations for snow emergency parking violations during the reporting period.
Monday, Feb. 18: At 12:32 am a complainant reported a stray dog near N. Locust and E. Reed Sts. The officer did not locate the animal. ***** Officers issued six citations for snow emergency parking violations during this reporting period.
Sunday, Feb. 17: At 7:43 pm officers were requested at Wild Rose Casino for a patron refusing to leave after being asked to do so by security staff. The officer arrived and attempted to have the male leave, but he continued to be disorderly. The officer arrested Jeremy Erskine-Jamal Miller, 27, of Carroll for disorderly conduct and trespass (simple misdemeanors)*. At 11:41 pm a complainant reported the theft of his pickup truck from Wild Rose Casino. Staff reviewed video and learned the complainant had been dropped off at the casino by the driver of an SUV and had not driven his truck there. The vehicle was located at his residence by the officer.
Saturday, Feb. 16: At 5:33 pm a complainant reported two dogs running at large in the 500 block of W. Harrison St. At 8:06 pm an officer responded to a residence in the 500 block of W. State St for a bat in the house. At 8:20 pm a resident reported that her dog ran away from her residence in the 600 block of W. State St.

Thursday, Feb. 14: At 7:21 pm a traffic stop in the 700 block of Wild Rose Lane resulted in the officer arresting Karibeth Danielle Baker, 39, of Scranton for driving while license revoked (serious misdemeanor)*. She was also cited for failure to provide proof of financial liability.
Wednesday, Feb. 13: ***** An arrest warrant has been requested for Curtis Wesley Jurgensen, 55, of Woodward for possession of marijuana- second offense (serious misdemeanor)*. The charge was made after test results were returned on items seized during a traffic stop 12/16.
Tuesday, Feb. 12: At 6:12 pm an officer assisted deputies at the medical center ER with an unruly inmate from the jail. At 6:29 pm a complainant requested an officer speak to his neighbor about the neighbor pushing snow across the street and depositing it on his property. The neighbor advised it would not be a future problem.
Monday, Feb.11: At 12:18 pm a DHS case worker spoke with an officer in connection to a possible sex assault occurring in Jefferson. The officer investigating. At 3:23 pm officers assisted the sheriff’s office with a two-vehicle accident on Highway 30 just west of M Ave. ***** Officers issued 11 citations for snow emergency parking violations and had the vehicles of three repeat offenders towed during this reporting period.
Sunday, Feb. 10: At 9:55 am officers assisted the jailer and deputies with an unruly inmate at the jail.
Saturday, Feb. 9: At 2:21 am while on routine patrol an officer located a male subject urinating on a vehicle in the parking lot of the Wild Rose Casino. The male appeared to be intoxicated. It was also determined the male had driven to the casino with a barred driver’s license. Also located on him was a plastic baggy containing one pill believed to be Ecstasy. As a result, James Merrell Mosley, 46, of Fort Dodge was arrested for possession of a controlled substance- first offense (serious misdemeanor) and driving while license barred- aggravated misdemeanor)*. At 6:07 pm as a result of a traffic stop in the 800 block of E. Lincoln Way, Samantha Henderson of Jefferson was arrested on an outstanding Guthrie County bench warrant for operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated*. At 7:17 pm a traffic stop was performed in the 100 block of N. Grimmell Road for a driver who failed to dim headlights. While speaking with the driver and an occupant in the vehicle, the officer noticed the smell of marijuana coming from the vehicle. The driver admitted to marijuana being in the vehicle. During a probable cause search of the vehicle the officer located a marijuana cigarette in the center console. The item was seized for lab testing. Future charges are pending testing of the seized item. At 10:18 pm a complainant requested an officer at a residence in the 100 block of E. Vest St for a possible underage drinking party inside the residence. The complainant met the officer at the house. The officer spoke to the owner of the residence by phone and was given permission to enter the residence and speak to the subjects inside. The officer spoke with a group of juveniles inside the residence. No signs of alcohol consumption were detected by the officers. While speaking further with the complainant, the officer noticed signs of alcohol impairment. The officer’s investigation led to the arrest of Sheila Rae Madson, 56, of Jefferson for OWI- first offense (serious misdemeanor)*.
Friday, Feb. 8: At 11:32 am staff at Greene County Middle School reported a possible theft of a Chromebook laptop. At 3:49 pm a complainant reported a violation of a no contact order at a residence in the 700 block of W. Harrison St. An officer is investigating. While speaking with the complainant, the officer determined there was an active Iowa DOT arrest warrant for her for fraud- false application (aggravated misdemeanor)*. Gretta Halterman, 18, was arrested on the charge. At 8:14 pm officers responded to Casa de Oro for two possibly intoxicated persons.
Thursday, Feb. 7: At 11 am a complainant advised officers she had fallen victim to a phone scam. She had placed money on Google Play cards as instructed by the caller. The scam is basically untraceable. Moore was sent to the Iowa Attorney General’s office for assistance. ***** Officers issued 24 citations for snow emergency parking violations.
Wednesday, Feb. 6: At 7:59 pm a complainant reported an electric overhead wire was down across her vehicle in the 400 block of N. Chestnut St. Alliant Energy was contacted and repaired the wire. The was no damage to the vehicle. ***** An officer has requested an arrest warrant for Robert Richard Kovar, 34, of Jefferson for possession of methamphetamine- second offense (aggravated misdemeanor)*. The warrant resulted from positive testing for meth of items on Kovar’s person during an arrest on 12/08/2018.
Tuesday, Feb. 5: At 6:26 pm an officer assisted the Jefferson fire department at Doc’s Stadium Bar and Grill. Occupants could smell smoke in the building after hearing a loud popping noise. A faulty light was determined to be the problem. No damage or fire took place.
Monday, Feb. 4: At 9:20 am staff at White Oak Station advised of a possible shoplifting event the prior evening. The officer is investigating.
Sunday, Feb. 3: At 7:47 pm a complainant reported items stolen from a mobile home in the 700 block of N. Cedar St. It was reported that after a tenant moved from the mobile home four curtain rods and three full length mirrors were missing from the residence. The estimate for the seven items was $50. An officer is investigating. At 1:51 pm a caller advised of a 3-year-old living in a Jefferson residence without water and the father uses narcotics in the presence of the child. The officer forwarded the info the DHS. At 8:31 pm a complainant requested an officer at a residence in the 600 block of S. Olive St and advised her former boyfriend had assaulted her. The officer’s investigation led to the arrest of Adam John Taylor Hopkins, 33, of Jefferson for domestic abuse assault (simple misdemeanor)*.
Saturday, Feb. 2: At 10:07 am officers responded to the 400 block of E. Lincoln Way for a report of a USPS mail carrier being bitten in the leg by a loose dog; the mail carrier was not injured. The dog was deemed “vicious” per Jefferson city ordinance. Arrangements were made to have the dog removed from city limits.
